Sportsmanship and Vicarious Learning

The role of Vicarious and Observational Learning in the promotion of aggressive behaviour was one of Bandura's original studies into 'Social Learning Theory'. In particular the part that a role model or 'socially valued other' in promoting 'vicarious reinforcement' is central. The concern that negative behaviours are promoted by this means, particularly through parents or peer group pressure is often reflected in the media and in research into criminal behaviour. Yesterday's post (October 19, 2006) in the online edition of Tallahassee Democrat illustrates the typical form of these concerns in relationship to the promotion and development of real sportmanship: Sportsmanship gets rocked by blindside hits
